It’s Hard to get things Right with no Experience
A few months backs I attempted to make Spanish Churros. It was cultural day at my church, Faith Worship Center in Brooklyn, NY and I had spent hours watching videos on how to make Spanish Churros.
Spain was the country I was representing and I wanted to make two dishes which spoke to the culture. My first dish was a Spanish Omelette which consist of eggs, potatoes and onions and then Spanish Churros with chocolate sauce.
I had all the ingredients and watched videos. It looked simple. More simple than the Spanish Omeltette which I thought would be the hardest of the two.
Boy was I wrong!
Instead of Spanish Churros I made runny dough that formed no color in the frying pan, but let’s rewind. My first attempt was a fail as I did not move quickly when mixing the hot water with flour. My dough became lumpy and therefore the dough had to be thrown away. On my second attempt I did not measure the water but with my mother’s assistance I was able to mix quicker and reduce the amount of lumps I had in the first batch. The problem I faced was I did not have enough flour to water therefore my dough was still too smooth and soft.
I tried putting it in the freezer to firm up but not for long because I had to be at our church by 5 p.m. and it was 4 p.m. Safe to say my Churros was an EPIC FAIL.
But I took some learnings from this— It is hard to get things right the first time when you have no experience. I never made Churros before. Sure, I cook and bake but dishes like churros and funnel cakes were foods I had no experience in making. So my first and second attempt’s were both fails. But here’s the good thing now I know my trajectory.
I know where I can go from here. I failed because I did not have initial experience, but now I have gained experience and know what not to do for the next time. I’ve taken my learnings in the failed arena and will apply it to my winner’s strategy.
Yes, my Churros were an epic fail. I lost that battle but the war to win still continues. It would been nice if I had year’s of experience. Of course! My Churros would have been a HIT, but life doesn’t work that way. No one comes out of the womb perfect.
It is OK to fail if your mission is to ultimately win!
Don’t let you first attempt at something deter you from trying something again— Fail— Learn— Apply — Win!
