Broken Promises: The Promises We Make to God
Holding Ourselves Accountable to the Promises We Make to God
This is an important one. In the new year, as Christians, we assess our commitment to God . We begin to declare promises in pray to God, telling what we will do this year for Him. However, many times we do not hold true to our words yet, God’s promises always come forth. We see it in our daily lives
Therefore we need to hold ourselves accountable. Stay true to your word to God . Don’t let Him down.
I think we’re all guilty of this at some point in our Christian journey, making promises to God we cannot keep. I think sometimes God smiles at us because He knows in about 2.5 seconds we’re going to break the very promise we just made. Thank God He is God because I would have cut you off a long time ago if that was me.
A promise is a coveted agreement between a person, him or herself, or with an individual or individuals. A promise holds weight. When you tell a child that you promise to buy them a pair of sneakers, they sit and wait, holding onto your promise. When you don’t deliver on your word, they call you a liar and the trust they had in you dissipates.
Now, how do you think God feels?
We seem to think that God doesn’t feel. The Bible records several times when the wrath of God was upon the children of Israel. He was angry with Sodom and Gomorrah; hence God destroyed them. So God has feelings, and we hurt Him many times when we say ” I promise” and never hold to it.
A well-known phrase says, “Word is Bond,” meaning I will come through on my word no matter. You can count on me because I will come through. The scripture says that all God’s promises are yes and amen in 2 Corinthians 1:20, meaning God’s promises are true. God’s promises are sure, and what He says He will do.
So why can’t we keep our promises to God? What is stopping you from holding yourself accountable for the promises you make? What is stopping you from upholding your word? Does your word mean nothing?
What if God promised us something and then decided He wasn’t going to provide you that car, house, job, wealth, or health? How would you feel?
Broken promises are like shards of glass. Their cuts can be deep and stingy. Let’s hold ourselves accountable for our words. Let our yay be yay, and our nay be nay. Don’t lie to God; just tell Him your heart. Instead of saying I promise, you can try, Lord, I’m struggling, but I want to get better. Help me, Jesus.
No more broken promises. Let’s leave it at the altar.
